Tan: The new thin?
OK, so I just got back from Cancun (oh, fresh guac, how I miss you already…) and despite slathering SPF 48 all over me like mayonnaise on a BLT, I am bronzed. Which is good and bad – good because hey, who doesn’t love the way they look tan (pale beauties Dita Von Teese and Nicole Kidman excluded) but bad because I know that a tan signifies skin damage, no matter how radiantly glow-y I may appear.
We stayed at an all-inclusive resort overrun with little kiddies and large-bellied men in unfortunately teeny Speedos. But a shiny ray of light came as I walked to the towel station on Saturday.
Is "Funny Sexpot" an oxymoron?
One of my and my husband’s favorite lines from a TV show recently spewed forth from the inimitableTina Fey on 30 Rock. All hopped up on mystery prescription pills to get her through an airplane ride, Fey spots Oprah sitting down next to her in first class. In a pitch-perfect drunken garble, she abruptly cuts off a phone convo she’s having, whispering, “I have to go…I’m snitting next to Borpoh!"
Oh, it feels good to laugh so hard you pee your yoga pants a little. Just a little.
Fey has been everywhere lately, collecting awards, spoofing Palin…and flaunting a crazy rockin’ bod.
First Lady Got Back
I read an op-ed in the Chicago Sun-Times a few days ago and that was the title. It originally ran on Salon.com and was written by Erin Aubry Kaplan, who introduces the piece saying, “I'm a black woman who never thought I'd see a powerful, beautiful female with a body like mine in the White House. Then I saw Michelle Obama -- and her booty!”Kaplan’s essay isn’t just fluff. It delves into areas such as the fetishization of the African-American woman’s behind throughout history, and the lack of attainable body image ideals for black women in today’s society.
Calorie-counting is chic!
New York and California are known for creating the latest fashion trends, like pastel mini-dresses and high-waisted skirts. Now the states are starting a trend to make it easier to fit into those fashions.
In September, California became the first state to require fast-food restaurants to print calorie counts on their menus. New York City has adopted similar requirements, which I’ve happily taken advantage of. As you may know from my previous posts, I hate to cook (unfortunately), and I often eat from the plethora of restaurants in my ‘hood in NYC. My fave is Cosi, mainly because they put so much meat on their sandwiches (I need my protein!).
